Petitions to Council
Residents who wish to bring a matter forward for Council’s consideration may do so by submitting a petition. Under Section 82 of the Community Charter, a petition is considered officially presented to Council once it has been filed with the Corporate Officer. To ensure a petition is valid, the Community Charter also requires that each petitioner provide their full name and residential address. This information helps verify that petition signatories are residents and supports transparency in the local government decision-making process.
The Community Charter states under Part 4, Division 1, Section 82 (1) and (2):
"...(1) A petition to a council is deemed to be presented to council when it is filed with the corporate officer.
(2) A petition to a council must include the full name and residential address of each petitioner..."
Before submitting a petition, please ensure all signatures are accompanied by the required information. Petitions that do not include the full name and residential address of each petitioner may not meet the legislative requirements set out in the Community Charter.
